Designed to help parents learn and practice the most effective way to read to children, Little Red Hen features WordWinks-questions, comments, and paraphrased vocabulary embedded in red within the text. While reading Little Red Hen to their child, parents are prompted to pause when they encounter red colored text. They can then read the question or comment in the more conversational tone of a parent rather than a narrator. Validated by educational researchers, this QC technique makes kids active participants in the reading process by stimulating enhanced listening, thinking, and talking skills.
According to Douglas Quenqua of The New York Times, "The quality of the communication between children and their parents and caregivers, the researchers say, is of much greater importance than the number of words a child hears." He quoted a study presented recently at a White House conference that found, "...Quality interactions involving words - the use of shared symbols ("Look, a dog!"); rituals ("Want a bottle after your bath?"); and conversational fluency ("Yes, that is a bus!") - were a far better predictor of language skills at age 3 than any other factor, including the quantity of words a child heard." In the "Listen with WordWinks" menu option, Ms. Rubin reads the classic folk tale aloud as a narrator might, at a moderate pace and with emphasized expression. When the text turns from black to red, the narrator pauses and reads the question or comment in a normal tone of voice. WordWinks are sprinkled across the pages of the text, and offer the opportunity for the child to think about what he or she has just heard, and respond aloud or to their inner voice. To promote listening and comprehension, pages cannot be turned until the child hears the entire narration. The "Listen with Wordwinks" option also helps foster independent play and learning.
In the "Read with WorkWinks" menu option, the parent can use Ms. Rubin's narration as a model, but read aloud themselves using the same WordWinks. This WordWinks technique weaves onscreen questions and comments into the story to maximize vocabulary, comprehension, and listening skills. These comments and paraphrased vocabulary embedded within the text help parents practice the most effective way to read aloud. As a result, children become active participants in the story by listening, thinking, and talking. CREATEit provides four overlapping layers that can be used for your presentations. The bottom layer is where the background scene is placed. This image can be loaded from a file or created ad hoc with the iPad camera. The second layer can be used to apply paint to the background. Select the Background Option to paint on this layer.
The third layer or stage is where the cast members and text captions are placed, above the background scene and paint. These items can be moved, rotated and resized at any time. Items on the stage also have properties that can be set, including transparency, horizontal orientation, sound control, cloning and deletion. Touch and hold an item to display it's property menu.
The fourth layer or foreground can be used to paint over the stage and the included items. Select the Foreground Option to paint on this layer. Paint can be edited, erased or deleted without affecting the included cast members. The game itself follows a storyline very comparable to an e-book format centered on the lovable dolphin BOTO. Each stage requires children to follow a specific set of instructions and travel the ocean to complete tasks ranging from puzzles to creative drawing. Children will be so wrapped up in the storyline that they won't even realize that they are learning.
A performance assessment is available to parents following the completion of each stage. The child's grade can be accessed to determine areas of proficiency and excellence. The widgets that come with it make it possible to check your dollar limit without even opening up the app. You can still assign category to each spending amount, but this feature is optional.
