AlphaTopics AAC App to improve communication for unclear speakers
A new article has been published at prMac.
AlphaTopics AAC App to improve communication for unclear speakers - Published on 02/20/15
Tactus Therapy Solutions announces their brand new app AlphaTopics, an augmentative communication app for people with unclear speech and language difficulties from different injuries. Using an evidence-based communication board combining letters and topics, unclear speakers can help their listeners understand them while using their natural remaining speech. AlphaTopics AAC is a new app to help people communicate more efficiently and effectively.
Vancouver, Canada - Tactus Therapy Solutions, a trusted developer of apps for speech therapy rehabilitation, has just launched a brand new app called AlphaTopics. AlphaTopics is an augmentative communication (AAC) app aimed at people with unclear speech (dysarthria) and language difficulties (aphasia) from stroke, traumatic brain injury, ALS, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy.
The app works by bringing an alphabet board and a topic board together in one application with all the benefits of technology: sound, visual feedback, adaptable settings, and portability. The speaker simply touches the topic they want to talk about, and then touches the first letter of each word they say. AlphaTopics lets the person with unclear speech speak naturally while giving the conversation partner enough context to understand better. With AlphaTopics, there's no more spelling out whole words or fixing typos. And, less waiting for the listener means the conversation keeps moving along.
Pointing to the first letter of each word not only gives the listener more information about the word, it also encourages the speaker to slow down and separate words, actually making each word clearer. Intelligibility of sentences is reported to improve 25% on average when using an alphabet board. Pointing to the topic before speaking narrows the range of possibilities for the listener, providing context. Studies show that using a topic cue increases word understanding by an average of 28%.
With AlphaTopics, the listener can hear the letters or topic selected. This means they can stay focused on the speaker and the conversation instead of staring at the device. Communication is faster and clearer using this simple speech supplementation strategy.
Previously, people with speech difficulties had to rely on paper-based boards that easily became ratty and worn out. Now, with AlphaTopics, the functionality of both an alphabet board and a topic board are always available on an iPhone or iPad in one convenient and customizable app.
The features of the alphabet board include:
* 26 letters in alphabetical order or 2 variations of frequency order
* 10 single digits to express any number
* Vowels are highlighted and aligned for faster navigation
* Natural speech reads out the name of each letter, number, or word
* Yes, no, question, smiley, space, and backspace buttons allow
The features of the topic board include:
* Fully customizable text that can be can re-ordered
* Voice output with adjustable speech rate
* Two sizes of grid to display 12 or 24 topics
* Pre-filled with functional topics for adults
Additional features include adjustable settings for visual, physical, language and cognitive impairments; a choice of four color schemes; and the option to pick which board comes up when the app starts.
AlphaTopics AAC was developed in a live event, with a blog chronicling each step of the process.
AlphaTopics is the fourteenth app developed by Tactus Therapy Solutions to support people who have difficulty communicating ideas with others. Tactus Therapy is proud to add AlphaTopics as their first AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) app to their line-up of existing therapy apps, serving people of all ages with communication disorders.
Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
* Requires iOS 7.0 or later
* 2.7 MB
Pricing and Availability:
As a special introductory offer, AlphaTopics is priced at $2.99 USD throughout February and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Medical category. In March the price will revert to the regular value price of $4.99 USD.

* 2.7 MB
Pricing and Availability:
As a special introductory offer, AlphaTopics is priced at $2.99 USD throughout February and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Medical category. In March the price will revert to the regular value price of $4.99 USD.

Paragon Disk Wiper 15 for Mac OS X Free
A new article has been published at prMac.
Paragon Disk Wiper 15 for Mac OS X Free - Published on 02/20/15
Paragon Software Group announces Paragon Disk Wiper 15 for Mac OS X, a free utility to efficiently clean hard disks and SSDs or permanently erase critical data on separate partitions or entire hard disks. With Disk Wiper for Mac, wiping is not accomplished under Mac OS X, but from a special Linux-based flash stick that can be easily created from the program. After booting the Mac from this device, the Wipe Wizard can irreversibly remove confidential data in just a few easy steps.
Freiburg, Germany - Paragon Software Group (PSG), a leader in data protection, backup and disaster recovery, announces the release of Paragon Disk Wiper 15 for Mac OS X Free - a utility to efficiently clean hard disks and SSDs or permanently erase critical data on separate partitions or entire hard disks. As research has shown, the 'trim' command to delete data on the entire drive or individual volumes does not completely remove all traces of your personal data. Trimming is accomplished by a delete operation in relatively large blocks while remnants and entire small files remain intact; some data still stays on the drive in segments. Besides, all storage service areas containing active user data remain intact.
To be confident your data on SSD doesn't fall into the wrong hands, you have two options: either physically shred your SSD into pieces that are small enough that a single chip cannot escape damage, or use a specialized data erasure utility that supports solid state drives, like Paragon's Disk Wiper for Mac. Paragon's solution is a free utility that performs a secure and permanent wipe within 20-30 seconds.
With Disk Wiper for Mac, wiping is not accomplished under Mac OS X, but from a special Linux-based flash stick that can be easily created from the program. After booting the Mac from this device, the Wipe Wizard can irreversibly remove confidential data in just a few easy steps. Multiple sanitization methods are available: "SSD Trim" (recommended for SSDs), selecting a specific algorithm, or a user-created method. Unlike traditional HDD-based wiping methods, "SSD Trim" works very quickly and is completely safe for SSDs.
Key features at a glance:
* Creates a bootable wiping media in a few clicks
* Wipe exactly what you need - the entire hard disk or separate partitions (primary, extended, logical)
* Wipes data even if the Mac fails to boot
* Supports ten different disk sanitization algorithms
* Paragon's powerful "SSD Trim" algorithm guarantees irreversible secure data destruction on SSD storage devices without causing unnecessary and undesirable wear
* Flexible customization options allow to create your own wipe algorithm with minimal effort - define up to four wiping patterns, number of passes for each wiping pattern and for the group of patterns, thus resulting in over 40000 possible number of passes
* Wipe report with extended hardware and system information to verify the accomplishment of the wipe operation
Paragon Mac ToolBox Portal:
The new Paragon Mac ToolBox web portal makes it easy to find which of the company's products can be used to solve particular Mac-related problems. For example, a user who wishes to reallocate disk space between OS X and Windows after using Boot Camp is directed to Paragon Camptune X. Or if the issue involves the use of an external drive in NTFS format, the Mac ToolBox reveals that Paragon NTFS for Mac 12 provides full read/write access. Some of the tools described in the Mac ToolBox are available free of charge, including Paragon Boot Camp Backup Free to back up Windows under OS X, while all commercial products are available on a time-limited demo basis.
System Requirements:
* Supports all OS X 10.6 and higher

Glogster App Hits 250,000 Downloads
A new article has been published at prMac.
Glogster App Hits 250,000 Downloads - Published on 02/20/15
Four months after the Glogster iPad application's highly anticipated release, "glogging on the go" is well on its way to being a worldwide phenomenon with 250,000 learners and educators worldwide enjoying the app's unique capabilities. Glogpedia allows users to instantly interact with any topic through a combination of text, images, video, audio and more; all in the same place. Learners can be inspired by over 8,000 hand-picked glogs and resources covering 80 topics across 9 disciplines.
Boston, Massachusetts - A quarter of a million people around the world are now carrying a library of 11,000 high-quality learning resources on their iPads, and a tool for creating content wherever inspiration hits. "This milestone marks a significant step in Glogster's mission to promote learning beyond the bounds of the traditional classroom," says Glogster Co-Founder Martin Santorcl.
From educators' responses it's easy to see that the app is widening horizons, both in terms of digital information and real-world discoveries. While the Web Picker browser harnesses the internet as a powerful research tool, the app's portable nature is inspiring users to explore the world around them and share their findings using a range of purpose-built templates and the iPad's built-in camera. Suddenly students are creating homework glogs before they've even reached home, educators are sharing sporting and musical accomplishments with parents in real-time, and learners are gathering media and compiling reports while on field trips.
Since the release, several features have been implemented to augment every step of an assignment: the 'Favorites' function allows users to create an easily-accessible list of content that inspires them, while the 'Copy' function has been extended to duplicate a user's personal creations as well as Glogpedia library content.
Technical features aside, the most telling thing about the app is how much fun students and educators are having: "Even when my students don't have an assigned project, they make Glogs at home," says technology educator Vicki Bradford. "They are all excited about this amazing tool and come in eager and excited to show me their latest creation."
The future is bright for mobile glogging, as this year will mark the release of Glogster for Android, as well as an individual license - an ideal way for university students and professionals to enjoy all the benefits of Glogster.
Device Requirements:
* Compatible with iPad
* Requires iOS 6.0 or later
* 21.0 MB
Pricing and Availability:
Glogster 1.1.1 is free and available worldwide through the App Store in the Education category. There is also an Android version available coming this year.
