Featuring the complete synthesis engine from the award-winning Enzyme synth, Enzyme Player contains all the basic essentials for computer music creation. The synth uses a unique combination of wavetable and physical modeling synthesis to create rich, dynamic musical timbre and textures. It also includes 50 presets and Hybrid Scanned/FM synthesis.
Queensland, Australia - Humanoid Sound Systems Limited is pleased to announce today, the release and immediate availability of Enzyme Player 1.0.40, its new VST and AudioUnits plug-in software synthesizer product for OS X. Enzyme Player contains the complete synthesis engine from the highly acclaimed Enzyme synth, which has won awards from Computer Music Magazine for its innovation and value (29 Jan 2014). With an elegant and intuitive user interface, Enzyme Player contains all the basic essentials for computer music creation.
The synth uses a unique combination of wavetable and physical modeling synthesis to create rich, dynamic musical timbre and textures. Enzyme Player is a preset-based player that includes 50 different presets from the full commercial version of Enzyme for the user to enjoy. Hybrid Scanned/FM synthesis offers even more sonic possibilities to musicians.

The unique sounds achieved in the Enzyme Player engine use a new synthesis technique called Scanned Synthesis, which generates sounds by scanning a dynamic system at a rate determined by the current pitch. Enzyme uses a model of scanned synthesis that simulates a string of nodes that are connected to each other by springs. There are also springs that pull the nodes towards a particular set of resting positions. When a note is played, the nodes are struck and then continue to be stimulated by a shaped hammer that sets the nodes oscillating. The positions of the nodes are then used to represent a wavetable that changes over time as the nodes oscillate. The nodes are scanned at a rate determined by the pitch of the current note.
Scot Solida of Computer Music Magazine says that the application "is capable of producing sounds of staggering beauty as well as knee-wobbling, teeth-grating terror." He adds, "It isn't long before you're knocking out interesting, unusual and, at times, quite musical timbres." (20 Feb 2014)
The Enzyme user interface is divided into four tabbed pages: Master, Synthesis, Modulation, and Effects. Enzyme Player only features the Master page, which includes Performance Parameters that are linked to the "hidden" parameters from the other pages as described below. Each page of Enzyme contains the same volume and stereo width knobs, a waveform display, and three buttons labeled Psycho, Danger, and Randomize. The waveform display, known as the Wave Scope, is an animated visual wavetable display that makes it easier to see how the sound is changing over time. The Psycho button removes the restrictions that stop the wavetable from flying out of control. The Danger button alters the signal path for an altogether less refined sound. Capable of producing very mysterious and beautiful sounds, the Randomize button is used to randomize nearly every parameter of the application. The Psycho, Danger, and Randomize buttons are only functional in the full commercial Enzyme version.
The Master page allows the user to manage the settings for coarse and fine tuning, pitch bend and its range, polyphony, and portamento. Enzyme Player also includes up to 16 performance parameters per preset, which can be manipulated by the user to explore new and interesting variations. Users can easily navigate between Enzyme Player's pages by clicking on its corresponding tab at the top of the screen.

From the Synthesis page, users can control the size and shape of the virtual hammer that excites the system and is defined by a chosen audio sample. The Hammer display shows a visual representation of the sample being used as a source of hammer shapes in addition to the settings for the Centre Wave and Masses Wave display that are scanned to produce the waveform display. From the Synthesis page, users can also change the node position's update rate and resting positions, as well as the force of the springs, control the distribution of frequencies used by the oscillators, and set the way in which the nodes are connected with each other by springs.
Featuring a conventional AHDSR volume envelope and LFO, the Modulation Matrix page makes it easy to configure and visualize the limitless parameter modulation possibilities. The performance parameters can be assigned as modulators to any other synch parameter. Therefore, the most important parameters can all be controlled from one page. They can also easily be controlled using a MIDI controller.
"Enzyme is one of those products that has the happy knack of channelling serendipity," comments Sam Inglis of Sound On Sound magazine (17 Apr 2014). "I've already built up a library of presets simply by hitting the random button and making minor adjustments to the results, and very few of them are sounds that I could have programmed by any other means, or in any other synthesizer. Highly recommended and, at the price, a complete bargain."
The Effects page gives access to the limitless ways in which the synth's output can be manipulated. There are two filters with a range of different filter types such as LowPass, HighPass, LowShelf, HighShelf, Notch, and PeakEQ. Users can also choose between serial and parallel configurations of these filters. Distortion modules and additional filters, such as delay, reverb, and flanger, can be added and manipulated in the Effects Rack.
"Enzyme Player's combination of a unique synthesis method and an extremely powerful and flexible modulation system is capable of creating unusual and distinctive tones unlike more conventional synths," says John Proctor of Humanoid Sound Systems. "We are offering the Enzyme Player, which is a pared down version of our full commercial Enzyme product, as a free download so the world can discover just what amazing sounds this synth can create. However, there are a few prerequisites for the freeware. First, a valid email is required for the free download of Enzyme Player. Second, the user is automatically signed up to our mailing list. We do not share details with anyone else and users can opt out at any time. Finally, they must agree not to share the software. After trying out Enzyme Player, we're confident people find Enzyme Player an easy-to-use and sonically superior synth."
