Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota - MaypopDesigns has released theGames: Grade 2 Math Standards, their third app in a series of critically acclaimed math practice apps for early elementary school aged children. With this new app, MaypopDesigns now offers a portfolio of apps aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Math Content in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades.
"Our own young daughters inspired us to start creating educational apps that would make practicing math fun and engaging on the iPhone or iPad," says Marta Snow, CEO, Co-Founder and Designer of MaypopDesigns. "We felt that the app market needed to have some truly educational math apps that focused on the math without getting lost in an extended introduction or reward play-time. Of course, we also wanted to make our apps unique and nice to look at too."
"theGames" apps provide practice of a variety of math content that is introduced in the early elementary grade levels. "Gently, but carefully aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Math," says the promotional video for theGames: Grade 1 Math Standards. This series of apps is one of the few offerings in the app market that provides such a range of content within a single app.
Math Concepts:
* Number Sense & Sequencing
* Addition/Subtraction
* Multiplication/Division
* Base Ten
* Place Values
* Fractions
* Shape Identification
* Patterns
* Symmetry
* Time
* Money
* Calendars
* Measurement
* Data Graphs
The whimsical animals found in theGames apps can be credited to Marta Snow's father, Bud Wudlick, an artist and retired elementary art teacher. Years ago he created a series of pen-and-ink drawings of animals and their Spanish names to hang up in his school's Spanish classroom. The hand drawn style is expanded upon and brightened up with the white, jewel-toned colors and transparency of the modern mobile user-interface.
Kids interact with the app by tapping on answer squares and sliding out tabs from the sides of the screens. A feature of the game-play that is not found in other apps is the method of "self-checking" answers - it's beyond multiple choice. Progressively harder questions are posed as kids answer questions correctly, thus providing engagement with the app over an entire school year. Rewards allow the kids to discover different animals, plants and insects from around the world. Parents and teachers can visually check-in on how kids are progressing, create an individualized practice set and see which Common Core Math topics are being practiced. There are no advertisements or in-app purchases, and any links to outside the app are behind a "parental gate."
Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
* Requires iOS 5.0 or later
* 44.4 MB

MaypopDesigns is the mom and pop app shop of Dan and Marta Snow. Dan, with degrees in Applied Physics and Computer Science from Yale and MIT, takes care of all the programming in-house, and Marta, with degrees in Architecture from Yale and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, takes care of all the artwork and business. The Maypop is a cooler-climate variety of the beautiful Passion Fruit Vine, which the Snow family has managed to grow in their garden near the shores of Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. A locale not to be mistaken for a tropical paradise, especially in January. It's also a fun name that sounds a bit like "mom and pop". They have two growing daughters that give inspiration for the apps created, and are excellent beta testers.
