Acrosync LLC announces an rsync-based photo and video backup app for iOS - Published on 01/22/15
Acrosync LLC has introduced PhotoBackup 1.0, a new photo and video backup app for iOS that uses the rsync protocol under the hood. PhotoBackup allows users to easily upload all or selected photos and videos to any computer running OS X or Linux, without the need to plug iOS devices into the computer via USB, and without the need to install additional software on the computers. PhotoBackup is designed to be very easy to use even without any knowledge of rsync.
Clifton Park, New York - Acrosync LLC, a software company developing rsync-based sync and backup solutions for desktops and mobile devices, has announced PhotoBackup, a new photo and video backup app for iOS. PhotoBackup uses the rsync protocol to transfer all or selected photos and videos to any computer running OS X or Linux, without the need to plug iOS devices into the computer via USB, and without the need to install additional software on the computer.
"A private photo and video backup solution is what many iOS users wanted," said Gilbert Chen, lead developer of PhotoBackup. "There are plenty of apps that can upload photos and videos to cloud storage providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. But few can upload to personal computers at home, which usually provide more storage space at lower cost, have faster connections, and are actually much safer considering the recent iCloud photo leak."
When asked the reason to choose the rsync protocol, Chen explains, "Everyone knows that rsync is a fast, efficient, and smart file transfer protocol. But few realizes that rsync is the only popular file transfer protocol that has built in a checksum verification mechanism to detect file corruption resulting from network transmission errors. This guarantee that every photo or video gets correctly backed up by PhotoBackup."
Users should not be deterred if they haven't heard of the rsync protocol, according to Chen. PhotoBackup is designed to be very easy to use even without any knowledge of rsync. The configuration involves selecting the computer to back up to, entering the login credentials, and then selecting a remote folder using the built-in folder browser. Once this one-time configuration is done, a tap on the backup button is all it takes to back up all photos and videos. On subsequent backups, only new photos and videos since last backup will be uploaded.
PhotoBackup also provides several very useful options for advanced users:
* Select any number of photos and videos to backup instead of all photos and videos
* Backup the current, rendered version if the photos have been edited. By default, PhotoBackup will always upload the original, highest quality version (for instance, RAW files if they are imported).
* Create Time Machine style snapshots. With this option on, for every backup PhotoBackup will create an incremental snapshot on the computer that shares the same copies of old photos and videos existing in previous snapshots. Only new photos and videos will take up space
* How to connect to the computer. The default is rsync over ssh, but PhotoBackup can also connect to an rsync daemon directly. The port number is configurable as well. Public key authentication for ssh login is also supported.
System requirements:
* Mac or Linux computers
* Network Attached Storage devices
* Online storage providers HiDrive, rsync.net, and Strongspace
Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
* Requires iOS 8.1 or later
* 1.6 MB
