Revere, Massachusetts - Independent developer James Hollender explains his Life Inventory apps. Using an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, users can learn more about themselves than they ever thought possible, and only at a small fraction the cost of a single office visit to a therapist. Originally designed for 12-steppers as a Moral Inventory it was discovered the inventory would also be of benefit to anyone, which is why the name has changed from "Step 4 Moral Inventory" to "Life Inventory". The terms "Life Inventory" and "Moral Inventory" are interchangeable.
Background:
Initially this app was developed specifically to address the Moral Inventory requirement of Step 4 in 12-Step programs like AA. It was soon discovered that a Moral Inventory was something which anyone could benefit from since it doesn't specifically focus on addictions but rather how we have dealt with all types of incidents in our life. For this reason, the app has now been renamed Life Inventory. Essentially the terms "Moral Inventory" and "Life Inventory" are interchangeable.
The Life Inventory app was created because of the complexity and length of time needed to do a proper Moral Inventory. When persons working their way through a 12-step program start creating their own Moral Inventory and discover that some ways of doing a Moral Inventory might require a thousand spreadsheets, the task seems daunting and many never get around to finishing it, thus depriving themselves of the rewards a Moral Inventory can provide. This app is a first attempt at finding a way to make the task less time consuming, while at the same time helping the user create a valuable asset in their recovery process.
Keep in mind there are many ways of completing a Life Inventory, and this is just one method. Individuals in 12-step programs should work with their sponsor in deciding for themselves which method is best.
Storage of your Life Inventory data is done using an underlying database which can be backed up and restored if necessary.
What is a Life/Moral Inventory:
First of all, Moral Inventory is short for A Searching and Fearless Written Moral Inventory of Yourself that surveys or summarizes the thoughts, events, emotions and actions of your life. There are four necessary elements of a Moral Inventory - writing, honesty, support, and prayer.
Writing. A key element to this is that it must be "written" since this inventory of your life will be most effective if you write it. You can hold a written list in your hands, review it, and refer to it when necessary. Unwritten thoughts are easy to forget, and distractions can easily interrupt you. As you write your Life Inventory, you will be able to think more clearly about the events in your life and you will be able to focus on them with less distraction.
Some people try to avoid writing their Life Inventory, feeling embarrassed or fearful about their writing ability or about someone else reading what they write. Don't let these fears stop you. Until you put it in a tangible form, you still haven't done your fourth step if you're involved in a 12-step program. As you complete this inventory of your life, remember that perfectionism - trying to do it perfectly and to please others - can block you from being complete.
Honesty. Being honest with yourself about the sinful areas of your life can be terrifying. Often people avoid looking too closely at themselves in the mirror of the past, fearing the reflection may reveal the truth of what their lives have become.
In your inventory, you will not only discover your weaknesses but you will also understand and appreciate your strengths better. In truth, you are a combination of weaknesses and strengths. As you become willing to see the whole truth about your past - good and bad - you allow the powers of heaven to reveal the truth and help you put the past in proper perspective.
Support. For those in 12-step programs, the encouragement and support of others who understand recovery can help you in your efforts.
Prayer. If you pray each time you sit down to write your inventory, God will help you. You will learn this reality as you take this seemingly imossible step - God can and will always be there for you ... you just have to ask.
What is the Purpose of a Life Inventory?
Most people who make a thorough Life Inventory discover many things covered don't seem, at first, to be related to their addiction(s) and/or other inappropriate behaviors. What happens is the discovery of all the voluminous things which make up your character, and make you act the way you do. Once you fully understand this, then you will be better able to know what triggers your behaviors. Following the method laid out in this app will very gently take you through the process, making what otherwise might seem impossible, much easier than you might have originally anticipated.
How Long Does it Take to Do a Life Inventory?
There is no correct answer. It is definitely a lot of work, especially the older you are, not because of your age, but rather the greater length of time you have been building your character. Much will depend on how much time you are willing to put into the effort on a regular basis. It often takes a full year to complete a thorough Life Inventory, but this app is designed to help cut down on this length by taking advantage of today's technology, especially that provided by the iPad. It's not that you will have less data, but it will be able to be entered quicker, and you won't have to do it on paper, or have to deal with hundreds or possibly thousands of files.
How do I Create My Life Inventory Using this App?
Basically, for the most part, you will be traversing through the different tabs at the bottom, from left to right:
* Build Lists
* Causes & Effects
* My Part
* Fears Analysis
* Fear Questions
* Sex Relations
You will most likely think of additional things to add as you go along, so the app has been designed to allow updates to the information.
For those who are involved in a 12-step program, once your have completed your Life Inventory, then you will proceed to begin to make use of it in Step 5 (Confession) by reading it to your sponsor, which is the last tab on the right, Reports.
As mentioned above, the app allows for updating your information, and as you continue recovering from your addiction(s), it is important to continue evaluating your life. Adding to your Life Inventory as new incidents arise and how you deal with them will be very helpful to you in continuing to make progress.
Allegory of the Dungeon Prison:
* You are locked deep underground in a dungeon
* There is dim reflected light coming down 12 steps
* Each step is taller than a man and looks impossible to climb
* Everyone is weak in one way or another
* Some are physically strong but spiritually weak
* Some are weak both physically and spiritually
* No one can break the rusty old lock and chain at the door
* There are people on the outside of the barred windows who climb the steps with ease
* Those outside the barred windows look healthy ... they've been in the sunlight
* They say they were once inside the dungeon
* They offer to teach how to find the key to gain release from the prison
* The key is found by digging down through different layers of earth
There are only two rules:
* You must pray for God's help each time you dig
* In order to maintain your freedom you must return to this place and teach others how to find the key
The Layers of Digging:
* Sand
* Pebbles
* Loose gravel
* Hard packed gravel
* Large stones mired in heavy clay
* Granite
