Serif has announced Affinity Photo 1.4, an important update to their 5-star rated image editor developed exclusively for Mac OS X. Built using Mac technologies on top of an advanced image-processing engine, Affinity Photo offers professional photographers blistering performance, highly accurate tools and a fresh workflow. With true end-to-end CMYK, 64-bit plug-in compatibility and more, version 1.4 boasts a huge update, including advanced panorama stitching and six extensions to Apple Photos.
Nottingham, United Kingdom - Serif has announced the first major update to its revolutionary professional image editor, Affinity Photo, and to celebrate is also offering a one-week 20% discount in the Mac App Store. First released in July, Affinity Photo has already gained a formidable reputation offering high end professional tools, incredible speed, and rock solid stability. The fact it's also offered at a low price, with no subscription to pay for, has made it very popular with photographers-regularly topping the Mac App Store charts, and receiving 1000s of 5-star ratings on the store worldwide.
Despite there being no subscription fee, Serif has always promised to release regular free updates to the app for at least the first couple of years, and although some minor improvements have already been pushed this is the first time a significant number of new features have been added. One area of all-new technology the app is boasting is super accurate image alignment. This has opened up two new major new features of panorama stitching and image stacks.
"The accuracy of panorama stitching in the app really is as good as it gets-and with Affinity Photo's advanced memory management you can build up images of 100s of mega-pixels and still have incredible performance when you go to edit," said Ashley Hewson, Serif's Managing Director. "Then we've got image stacks - from simply removing an unwanted moving object from multiple shots to advanced techniques like layering multi-exposure composites, they add a whole new dimension to what is possible in the app."
Another big addition has been the inclusion of six extensions for Apple Photos, opening up some of Affinity's technology directly from within the Apple app. The extensions included are:
* Develop - with full RAW editing capability
* Liquify - for warping and re-sculpting areas of images
* Haze Removal - intelligently removing fog, mist and smog
* Miniature - for depth of field and tilt shift adjustments
* Monochrome - offering fine control over black and white conversion
* Retouch - including a full suite of retouching tools and smart pixel selection
"Opening up the ability for developers to produce extensions for Photos was a big part of the El Capitan update, and it's been fun writing for it," said Ashley. "While Affinity Photo is a very robust professional product and will always stay that way, extensions allow us to expose some of that power in a more use-case focused way for quick and easy editing."
Other Apple technology has been harnessed, too-in particular fully supporting the extended-gamut DCI-P3 displays found in the latest iMacs, giving a depth of colour to images beyond what was possible before. Other new features and improvements include canvas rotation, PDF/X and spot colour support, customisable keyboard shortcuts, additions to filters, adjustment layers and blend modes, and significant improvements to PSD compatibility.
The developers have had an incredibly busy end to the year, as not only have they been preparing the update to Affinity Photo, they have also launched an update to their Apple Designer Award-winning app Affinity Designer today. Designer now includes artboards, along with lots of new professional print features. Launching both updates at the same time ensures both apps remain fully compatible with each other.

Unlike conventional battle strategy games that are often "shoot 'em up" arcade style offerings, Artificial Defense delivers a sophisticated, intelligent real-time orbital shooter experience in a virtual reality setting.
Here's the Artificial Defense story: Gamers assume the identity of a powerful computer system known as "The Machine", and must defend servers from swarms of invading attackers. There are three key gameplay elements: offense, defense and conquer.
* OFFENSE: Gamers try to obliterate enemies by using up to 21 different weapons, from conventional and rather antiquated (though partially effective) flintlocks, to devastating hellfire missiles, nuclear bombs, and even asteroids. In total, there are 7 handgun weapons, 7 missile weapons, and 7 heavy duty weapons.
* DEFENSE: Gamers protect their network of servers by fortifying 21 defense towers, which range from pistol sentry towers, to those that use flame throwers and launch long-range railgun artillery. 7 of these towers are close-combat towers, while 7 are long-range towers. There are also 7 production towers that produce essential RAM, which gamers stockpile and secure.
* CONQUER: Gamers must launch intrusion counter measures (ICMs) to re-conquer breached honeypots, firewalls and defense nodes. They must also secure a safe path for datablip convoys, which carry valuable data from databases to backup devices
Gamers start out as an analog punch-tape system, and by successfully making their way through 49 unique challenges, they evolve through 6 systems on their way to becoming a powerful quantum A.I. computer.
Other Artificial Defense special features include:
* 13 music tracks, including electro, new retro wave, 8-bit style, heavy metal, and more
* Mobile GFX settings that ensure the game looks brilliant on high-end devices, while being fully playable on older models

The fundamental objectives of Blitz Racer 2.0 remain the same, and are refreshingly simple: don't crash, stay alive, and keep racing. However, achieving these goals is easier said than done. Gamers must deftly and rapidly navigate various race tracks that feature a sleek isometric design, and that have both a retro and futuristic feel at the same time. It really is a unique aesthetic that will impress both new and "old school" gamers alike.
Tapping left allows gamers to turn 90 degrees counter-clockwise (i.e. to the left), while tapping right allows gamers to turn 90 degrees clockwise (i.e. to the right). Each time they complete a lap, gamers earn a star. When they collect enough stars, they head to the next level and face an even tougher track.
In the original version of Blitz Racer - which won the Pocket Gamer Silver Award, and was heralded as a game that "delivers the arcade racing goods with admirable style and uniqueness" - gamers had to contend with 6 distinct race tracks. Now in version 2.0, they're presented with 19 brand new courses, bringing the total to 25. What's more, each track has its own original techno-inspired, adrenaline-pumping anthem.
