The app is a free-for-download alarm clock that wakes the user up with radio streaming. Currently, the app covers over 7.000 radio stations from all over the world. bedr radio has a snooze timer, smooth alarm (slowly-increasing volume) and night mode. The alarm will be put to snooze / turned off by simply tapping once or twice on the screen.
A lot of effort has been put into design as well as intuitive and simple ways of user interaction. The app introduces the one-tap, two-tap gestures to put the alarm into snooze or stop the alarm. Tapping into the screen makes it easier for the user to stop the alarm while being half-asleep. In the scenario, where the user wants to continue listening to the radio and stop the alarm at the same time, the shake gesture has been added. By shaking the phone, the alarm screen will disappear and the radio will proceed with the radio player screen.
When setting up an alarm, bedr radio includes several options on the behavior of the alarm. One common option is the snooze timer, which can be set from 1 minute up to 1 hour. Another option is the smooth alarm. This feature stands for volume increase and prevents an abrupt wake-up call.
Additionally, vibration can be turned on to start with the alarm and streaming can be restricted to play over wi-fi only. In case that the alarm fires in the absence of the user, the alarm will auto-stop. The time elapsed before the auto-stop steps in, is adjustable from 10 minutes to 1 hour.
Unlike existing alarm clock radio apps, bedr radio solves the problem where alarm fails due to networking issues. Whenever radio streaming becomes unstable, a fallback alarm sound will be played instead. The user may also choose an existing song from the device as a backup alarm tone.
Besides selecting radio stations by country, genre, or station name, bedr radio also includes the "What's Hot" section. In this section, the most favored radio stations of the user's country are listed top-down. Furthermore, radio stations can be added to the favorites list for quick access.
A night clock is also part of this app. It can be turned on by tapping on the moon-icon on the main screen or by simply staying idle. If the app is open in the main screen or in the alarm list screen, bedr radio will turn the night clock on automatically after 30 seconds of idle time. This way, it will only take one step: the user opens the app, puts the iPhone on the bed table and the night clock will turn itself on. The night clock will be turned off by tapping into the screen.
What bedr radio has in common with other alarm clocks, is that the app needs to run in foreground for the alarm to work. This is due to the fact, that third-party apps are not allowed to start on its own - hence starting the app before going to sleep is vital. bedr radio is free to download, but contains advertisements.
