Stroop effect! 1.1 - A New Entertaining Logic Puzzle for iOS Devices - Published on 04/22/14

Independent developer Attila Hegedus has introduced Stroop effect! 1.1, his new logic puzzle app for iOS devices. Based on the famous psychological test that focuses on selective attention, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed, Stroop effect! serves as both an entertaining and educational app. Players must select the correct tint color indicated by the word at the top of the screen. The challenge lies in that the text is not necessarily colored in the hue in which it is represented.

Debrecen, Hungary - Independent developer Attila Hegedus has announced the release of Stroop effect! 1.1, his new logic puzzle app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. Stroop effect! can serve as both an entertaining and educational app.

Stroop effect! is a fun and effective tool for measuring how quickly the player's brain responds to conflicting information. There are 3 words displayed on the screen. One word is placed centered at the top of the screen and the other two words are placed in the bottom left and right corners. Each word displays the name of a color. However, the word is not necessarily tinted in the color it denotes. The player needs to select the option whose text denotes the color of the word at the top of the screen. The challenge lies in that the bottom text is not necessarily colored in the hue in which it is represented.

For example, the word at the top of the screen says 'Green' and is colored green. The choices at the bottom of the screen are 'Red' and 'Green.' However, the word 'Red' is colored green and the word 'Green' is colored red. Despite it being colored red, the correct choice at the bottom of the screen is the word 'Green' because it is the color of the word at the top of the screen. Basically, the player is required to indicate the color of the word - not what the word says.

Feature Highlights:
* Simple and minimalistic User Interface
* Based on famous psychological test, the Stroop test
* Develops selective attention, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed
* Two different game modes: Classic and Expert
* Timed gameplay
* Game Center supported
* Ability to compete locally and globally
* Tutorial
* Supports retina display

There are two different modes of gameplay in Stroop effect!. In Classic mode, players choose between 2 colors, Red and Green. In Expert mode, players must choose between 6 different colors: Green, Red, Purple, Yellow, Blue, and Orange. Each game is 60 seconds long. For every correct answer, the player is awarded a point. However, for every incorrect answer, one point is deducted from the player's score. To access Expert mode, players can obtain early access by achieving a score of 50 in Classic mode or with an in-app purchase. Stroop effect! is Game Center-supported so players can compete with friends locally and other players globally. There is also a global high score leaderboard for both game modes.

The app is based by the famous psychological test inspired by the findings of experimental psychologist John Ridley Stroop. First published in 1929, the Stroop effect is a demonstration of interference in the reaction time of a task. Widely used in clinical practice and investigation, the Stroop test is a psychological evaluation based on this principal that focuses on selective attention, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed. Essentially, the Stroop test can measure many different things, including how well the selective attention works and the brain's processing speed.

While playing Stroop effect!, the player's brain experiences an incongruence between words and colors. When the object is to report the color, the word information arrives at the player's decision process stage earlier than the color information and results in processing confusion. Conversely, when the task is to report the word, a decision can be made before the conflicting color information arrives in the player's brain because the color information lags behind the word information.

"Stroop effect! sounds easy but it is, in fact, a very challenging game," says independent developer Attila Hegedus. "I intentionally designed the interface to be minimally simplistic so the player can focus on the game. However, it has gorgeous graphics and even takes advantage of new technologies introduced in iOS 7. Stroop effect! is a fun and educational app that players can enjoy while competing against family and friends."
