Long Beach, California - There is no doubt you're reading this press release on a software application. It's safe to say that apps are transforming the way we live. Filmmakers Jedidiah Hurt and Jake Schumacher have taken a step to uncovering different sides to the cultural awareness of apps with the launch of their documentary, "App: The Human Story".
"Since the first computer, humanity has been fashioning digital tools to extend our capabilities and augment our reality. Thanks to these digital applications, mankind has surged forward in understanding of ourselves, the world, and what lies beyond," said Jake Schumacher, filmmaker and co-director.
Apps have captured the attention of the globe. Although some apps seem trivial and inconsequential, the details of our software says a lot about who we are as humans. Apps have changed how we live our lives and they will undoubtedly shape our future.
Just as apps have made its way to the world stage, a small community of developers has emerged as modern day artisans. Their obsession over the details of every interaction and pixel has given these unlikely leaders a voice in shaping software in a way that respects what it means to be human. A few of the app industry supporters of the documentary include:
John Gruber - A prolific thinker and writer on all things Apple and design at daringfireball.net. John is also one third of the award winning software company Q-Branch.
Marco Arment - Known for building great products (Tumblr, Instapaper, The Magazine) and somewhat notorious for having them sell, Marco is a relentless indie developer at the top of his game.
Bjorn Jeffery - Co-founder and CEO of Toca Boca, a forward-thinking toy company that's found huge success by bypassing the cruft and simply delighting kids and parents with beautiful, fun apps.
"App creation has become the new art form for our generation. This is the story of the cultural phenomenon that touches all our lives," said Jedidiah Hurt, filmmaker and co-director. "We are hopeful the documentary will resonate with anyone, from those who use apps daily, to those actually creating them, with the goal of finishing the film in late 2015."
Hurt and Schumacher are currently raising $100,000 through Kickstarter to complete the film and have already raised almost 71 percent of the funds for production. They are currently looking for backers and sponsors.
"We aim to delight our sponsors for helping us make this film a reality. We will be actively promoting our Kickstarter sponsors for the next year-and-a-half on our website, Twitter, Facebook, Backer Updates and other App related outlets. Also, each sponsor will have a permanent home on our website," said Jedidiah Hurt, filmmaker and co-director.
