Sheffield, United Kingdom - Spiders in the Bath is a tilt-action game available for free download on iOS and Android platforms. Tilt (or touch) your device to control a jet of water in order to prevent an increasingly challenging number of spiders from reaching the water faucet. The game combines realistic water physics with vibrant presentation, and a familiar domestic premise. It is the debut game from collaborators Rolling Muk, comprised of artist Stuart Wood (Digital Wood) and programmer Hugh Lowry (misterSquare). It features an attractive, cute graphical style and a retro 16-bit soundtrack from Satsuma Audio, as well as many sampled cries of spiders successfully flushed down the plug hole.
Featuring an intuitive one-handed, tilt control system, realistic physics and a simple, relatable premise. There are eight types of arachnid, each with different behaviour patterns. The docile blue-spotted spiders take a direct path whilst the trickier jumping spiders are harder to hit. The larger the spider, the greater resistance they exert against the water stream, distracting the players attention from the smaller, nimbler spiders. The toughest challenge being the almost-unstoppable black widow. Spitting spiders place extra pressure on the player and will shoot webs which can cause the water faucet to temporarily block. The player must use their strategy and reflexes when dealing with multiple varieties once the action becomes frantic.
The game is designed to be played on the go with the average game lasting 60-90 seconds.
There is a trophy system which records high score achievements and four unlockable themes, varying from a Tiki Bath, to a funky disco setting. There are many environments to uncover and more to come in future updates. The concept is being expanded for a fully-fledged sequel with a greater number of spiders and stages, due for release early 2015.
