"I was very impressed with the way this app was illustrated," reports Emma Mitchel of MobiAppsReview. "Chess is a very old traditional game and I was pleased to see that the developers made the decision to stick to traditional colours and design with the graphics of this game. I really was very impressed with this app and would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of strategic games and enjoys a challenge." (27 Oct 2013)

"The Bobby Fischer of chess apps - undoubtedly the best," claims Best Apps. "(Shredder Chess) isn't one to just brag and hand your rear-end to you and leave you laying in a ditch, it wants to nurture you into a grandmaster. There's an adjustable playing standard that learns from your performance to match you against a computer player of relatively equal standing." (5 Jul 2011)

There are five different kinds of gameplay available in Chess Online with games categorized depending on the total estimated time they will complete. Bullet games are very fast, live games that usually conclude within 3 minutes. Blitz are the more traditionally-timed online games and finish within 5 and 15 minutes. Standard games typically last from 30 minutes to several hours. Correspondence are the marathon-style of untimed gameplay that usually last days.

Chess Online also features a special time control known as Hour Glass. In Hour Glass, both players start with a minute on their clock. While the clock of the player to move winds down, the clock of his opponent reloads. Both players need to play close to the same speed to maintain an even advantage. In all categories, Chess Online offers recommended time controls but players can customize them or opt not to use them as well.

"If you are interested in really upping your chess skills," advised Campbell Bird of 148 Apps, "Shredder may be exactly what you need, and you can consider your money well spent. Shredder Chess does more to actually teach players new strategies and how to improve their game than any other chess app I've seen." (10 May 2013)

Chess Online offers chess tournaments in each category every hour. Players can earn Tourney Points and climb the Chess Online leaderboard by competing against an opponent and winning the match. Tournaments are conducted in a round-robin, double round-robin, or swiss style. Chess Online also allows users to review details of upcoming or completed game and share them on Facebook, Messaging, or as a web link. Chess Online provides an integrated experience with the ability to send messages to fellow players, chat during the game with opponents, and receive push notifications for important events like incoming chat messages or when their opponent has made a move.

Chess Online publishes in-depth statistics of results so players can improve their game. By using the "My Analysis" tool, players can try their ideas on a chess board and gain insights on the consequences of a certain line or move. Players can also view their Elo ranking, which is a common rating system in chess. Chess Online also allows users to view Tourney and Elo ratings of their friends and other Chess Online members.

Version 1.2 includes several modifications to increase functionality and improve gameplay. Chess Online provides players the option to disable personal live game challenges and to turn on/off the "Show Legal Moves" setting. The update also features better tournament support and better feedback in the event of a bad connection.

"Whether you're a pro player or a novice, Chess Online @ ShredderChess.net is the game for you," says Eiko Bleicher of Shredder Chess. "Chess Online offers more interactive gameplay options than any other app and provides more in-depth gameplay feedback so you can track and improve your Elo rating. Let ShredderChess.net be the venue for your online chess experience and you'll understand why we have won seventeen titles as the World Computer Chess Champion."
