San Jose, California - Wobbleworks LLC has released the free 8.2 update to its flagship astronomy app Luminos, the recent recipient of a PC Magazine Editor's Choice award. The app now includes the largest deep space image library of any mobile application, covering more than 13,000 entries in the most popular deep space catalogs. In addition, Luminos is now the first app with live sky charts for Apple Watch, allowing users to track satellites, planets, and stars in real time.

The Luminos deep space image catalog is the result of months of processing of image plates from the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS), a sky atlas published by the Space Telescope Science Institute. Wobbleworks combined computer vision and manual editing techniques on regions of the DSS representing the galaxies, nebulae, supernovae, and star clusters of the popular New General Catalogue and Index Catalogue. Thousands of images were color adjusted, filtered, and corrected to create a built-in reference for Luminos users. To provide the most accurate position in the sky, each deep space image was aligned against a five hundred million entry star catalog from the US Navy.

Luminos 8.2 is also the first app to support live sky charts on Apple Watch, giving both amateur and experienced astronomers a quick guide to what is overhead right now. The Luminos watch app combines visualizations of the sky from any location with animated legends to identify objects as they move overhead. In addition to sky charts, Luminos includes detailed information for satellites, planets, and stars which also updates in real time.
