Astronomy App Luminos Introduces 3D Meteor Showers and Automation - Published on 07/30/15

Wobbleworks LLC has released Luminos 8.3, its second free feature update this year for its flagship astronomy app for iOS. Luminos is the award-winning, all-in-one astronomy app that goes beyond simple stargazing. The app now offers tracking and display of meteor showers, presented as 3D objects which can be viewed either from the ground or from orbit. Luminos also includes new ways to share and automate the control of the app.

San Jose, California - Wobbleworks LLC has released its latest free feature update to its flagship astronomy app Luminos, bringing meteor showers and full remote automation to the award-winning app. Users can now locate meteor showers using the app's "Tonight's Best" scheduling assistant and see them simulated as 3D objects in the night sky. Luminos has also added a new ability to control the app using shared links, giving users full power to automate the app's features.

Meteor showers in Luminos are based on orbital calculations of the parent comets and asteroids which created them. Luminos will present 3D representations of the meteors matching empirical data predicting their strength, and the rate of meteors can then be adjusted by users up to a more frequent eye-catching display. Because the meteors are drawn as 3D objects, they can be viewed either from the ground or from orbit, such as a simulation of a meteor shower from the perspective of the International Space Station.

Luminos also includes recreations of famous historical meteor showers such as the Leonid meteor storm of 1833, where the meteor rate was more than 100,000 per hour. Users can simulate the appearance of these storms with quick tap access to the time and to the location of the events.

For customers looking to share their Luminos experiences with others, the app now includes the ability to create URL links which control it when activated in a browser on a device with the app installed. Users can easily share or author URLs with access to the full functionality of Luminos: changing location or orbiting bodies in space, controlling time, displaying messages, and more. Luminos URLs can be used to save favorite observation targets or create educational sequences to be viewed by others.

Luminos 8.3 also incorporates the latest appearance of Pluto based on the New Horizons mission.

Luminos is the recent recipient of a 2015 PC Magazine Editor's Choice award. The previous version of Luminos added the largest deep space image collection of any mobile app, as well as the first live sky charts for Apple Watch.
