OhMD, a secure texting app for doctors and patients, goes freemium - Published on 06/08/16

OhMD, the "Whatsapp for healthcare," goes freemium with the launch of a free version of their paid subscription-based app. In 110 hospitals and practices nationwide, patients are using OhMD to securely text their doctors and care teams about everything from a medical concern, an appointment question, or even text an image of a rash. Doctors can use OhMD to text with patients, or even coordinate care with other doctors both in and outside their organization.

New York, New York and Burlington, Vermont - OhMD, a portfolio company of the Blueprint Health Accelerator in NYC, has released a free version of the OhMD app that is now available in Apple's App Store and the Google Play Store. Recently piloted by a world-renowned cancer hospital in New York City and used by 110 organizations across 35 states, OhMD allows for simple, secure communication between healthcare providers, care teams and patients. Secure and efficient communication improves the patient experience and health outcomes while decreasing the cost of care in alignment with value-based care initiatives.

Studies show that physicians and other healthcare professionals are already texting regularly. OhMD allows healthcare providers and their care teams to have HIPAA-compliant text message conversations from their iPhone, Android, or desktop device, and these text conversations can be automatically stored in the electronic health record (EHR). The OhMD premium solution features functionality for healthcare providers to collect patient-reported data, broadcast messages, improve medication and care plan adherence through text reminders, and distribute educational materials while providing the type of healthcare experience patients want.

"Our team has spent the last decade convincing doctors to use electronic medical record systems they wanted nothing to do with" said Ethan Bechtel, Co-Founder of OhMD. "It's refreshing to have built a product that doctors and patients truly enjoy using. It's a consumer-friendly app with essentially zero learning curve."

Doctors and healthcare providers in the U.S. can now download and use the OhMD app's basic functionality for free. Additional functionality, including electronic health record integration, is available for doctors with a paid subscription to the service.
