Comments and vocabulary embedded within the text help parents practice the most effective way to read aloud.

Weston, Connecticut - Award-winning You TELL Me Stories (YTMS) has announced the release and availability of Little Red Hen with WordWinks and Retell, Record & Share 1.0, the sixth illustrated book app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in the You TELL Me Stories Library. Designed to help parents learn and practice the most effective way to read to children, Little Red Hen features WordWinks-questions, comments, and paraphrased vocabulary embedded in red within the text. While reading Little Red Hen to their child, parents are prompted to pause when they encounter red colored text. They can then read the question or comment in the more conversational tone of a parent rather than a narrator. Validated by educational researchers, this QC technique makes kids active participants in the reading process by stimulating enhanced listening, thinking, and talking skills.

According to Douglas Quenqua of The New York Times, "The quality of the communication between children and their parents and caregivers, the researchers say, is of much greater importance than the number of words a child hears." He quoted a study presented recently at a White House conference that found, "...Quality interactions involving words - the use of shared symbols ("Look, a dog!"); rituals ("Want a bottle after your bath?"); and conversational fluency ("Yes, that is a bus!") - were a far better predictor of language skills at age 3 than any other factor, including the quantity of words a child heard." (16 Oct 2014)

"This is exactly what our books strive to achieve," states Lynn Rubin, expert in early childhood education and Co-Founder of You TELL Me Stories. "Our books teach parents how to read like a master teacher would, interjecting text commentaries, asking questions about the story, and paraphrasing vocabulary. We provide parents with the exact script to use while reading to their child so they can effectively build the essential oral language skills vital for literacy."

In the "Listen with WordWinks" menu option, Ms. Rubin reads the classic folk tale aloud as a narrator might, at a moderate pace and with emphasized expression. When the text turns from black to red, the narrator pauses and reads the question or comment in a normal tone of voice. WordWinks are sprinkled across the pages of the text, and offer the opportunity for the child to think about what he or she has just heard, and respond aloud or to their inner voice. To promote listening and comprehension, pages cannot be turned until the child hears the entire narration. The "Listen with Wordwinks" option also helps foster independent play and learning.

In the "Read with WorkWinks" menu option, the parent can use Ms. Rubin's narration as a model, but read aloud themselves using the same WordWinks. This WordWinks technique weaves onscreen questions and comments into the story to maximize vocabulary, comprehension, and listening skills. These comments and paraphrased vocabulary embedded within the text help parents practice the most effective way to read aloud. As a result, children become active participants in the story by listening, thinking, and talking. "It is the quality of words, not just the quantity," says Alexandra Hartenbaum, early childhood educator and Co-Founder of You TELL Me Stories, "That is crucial to developing a child's language skills."

"The innovative WordWinks feature adds a new level of comprehension to each page of the story," reviewed Academics' Choice, which awarded You TELL Me Stories their Smart Book Award. "It's as if reading with mom or your favorite teacher, asking you questions and commenting on the illustrations and writing as you go. The WordWinks are interwoven into the story as red sentences that enhance understanding without distracting from the story itself. The Listen with WordWinks capability makes the app ideal for independent listening activities." (2 Sep 2013)

This is where they can put the pictures in order to tell the story again, and then record their own voice re-telling the story. The recording can be shared via E-mail with family, teachers, and friends. Retelling the story is important practice for developing the child's listening and speaking skills. Retell, Record and Share also allows the child a chance to learn and utilize new vocabulary, put ideas in order so they make sense, identify important details, and build memory.

"The stories are engaging and appealing," says Judith C. Hochman, Ed. D. of Windward Teacher Training Institute. "Every home, classroom, and library serving preschool and primary grade children should have access to You TELL Me Stories."

The classic folk tale is retold by Meghan Colby and features colorful illustrations by Ignacio G. As an added bonus, a Free Activity Book can be downloaded with registration.
